Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency rickets are still important problem in many countries especially developing and underdeveloped countries. We experienced 8 cases of Vitamin D deficiency rickets from May, 1973 to Aug. 1974. All 8 cases had no history of any Vitamin supplementation. Serum calcium. phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels were revealed rachitic changes. Confirmatory diagnosis was made by X-ray examination.
We divided patient into oral and parenteral therapy group.
1. One of eight cases was given 20, 000 IU/day LM injection of Vitamin D for 30 days.
2. One of eight cases was given 200, 000 IU every other day IM injection of Vitamin D 3 times.
3. Two of eight cases were given a large single dose 600, 000 IU. IM injection of Vitamin D
4. Two of eight cases were given 5, 000 IU/day per os for 4months.
5. Two of eight cases were given 20. 000 IU/day for I months.
600, 000 N of total amount of Vitamin D for two groups was given, when we had found no toxic symptoms and signs with Vitamin D such as hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, anorexia, .irritability, lethargy and muscular hypotonia in all patients.
There were no significant difference in the course and result of treatment. All cases had good .healing process and improvement clinically, biochemically and roentgenogram.
Literature review was made briefly.
